قوتِ سنگ سے جو قوی ہے یاد

I was able to watch stonemason Douglas Stevens working as he patiently carved the wave-like characters of the Urdu script. Some very precise and fine work went into this letter carving and I must say, Urdu not only sounds beautiful, but it looks beautiful too. Very natural, mirroring shapes in nature - ripples in still wet sand, wind whipping over stoic mountain tops, deep pools and flowing rivers, blades of grass moving in a summer breeze. Visually, this is the most beautiful translation of ‘memory, stronger than stone’ and personally it is incredibly moving to see this, the language of my grandfather carved into Scottish sandstone.
